REDUX: Connecticut will lock down infants with RFID

L'enfant on lockdown

BTC - Good 'ol Wisconsin.  Home to Real ID beneficiaries, Rep. James Sensenbrenner, and technology mavens hell bent on getting babies enrolled with RFID tags. Someone made a sale to a receptive Conneticut hospital.

c/o RFID News
Danbury Hospital in Danbury, Conn. has implemented an RFID system for its child-related facilities in an effort to keep newborns safe and reduce the risk of abductions.
The hospital has selected Wisconsin-based RF Technologies Safe Place Infant Security product for this effort. It’s implemented the system on three floors of the hospital, including the family birthing and pediatric units.
Safe Place uses water-resistant, lightweight transmitters and the company’s Smart Sense technology in a band that attaches around an infant’s ankle. Staff can then monitor the infants using automated software. If a band is loose, tampered with or removed, the software alerts the staff.
Likewise, if an infant wearing a transmitter is in range of a monitored exit, the system can lock the doors and send out a potential security threat alert. Danbury Hospital is part of the Western Connecticut Health Network. It delivers about 2,500 babies annually. #

Wisconsin NBC affilliate misinforms constituents of Real ID "bill"

New secured licenses will be produced in California

BTC-  NBC's TMJ news desk reported a Real ID bill requiring local drivers license applicants to adjust to "secured ID" rules administered only by the Department of Transportation.  There is no such bill.

The NBC affiliate's news desk operator's "It's a done deal" quote seems to imply this is more than just editorializing - it's misinformation.

Wisconsin is struggling to save costs on national secured ID cards, which a local DOT Operations Manager compared to a passport in terms of risks and identity theft.  The new licenses will greenlight Wisconsin airtravel and voting in local elections.  Drivers licenses will be farmed out to L-1 Identity solutions in California for production and mailed back to Wisconsin residents.

Wisconsin would not be the first state to attempt administrative rule over local rule of law or due process of consent.

Real ID certified licenses distribution will start in the fall of 2011.

FLOGGER: Moments in Real ID History, Indiana & Wisconsin

National ID bashing with CATO policy brand Jim Harper

The Journal Gazette in Fort Wayne, Indiana takes Governor Mitch Daniels (R) to task for claiming that the burdensome identification requirements he’s implementing in the state are required by federal law.

Many states across the country have refused to participate in the REAL ID Act, preserving their citizens’ privacy and tax dollars. Not Governor Daniels, and in a recent press release he misstated federal identification requirements while acting as if he’s helpless to do anything about them.

Says the Journal Gazette: “[B]laming the federal government for non-existent requirements is disingenuous. If the governor wants Hoosiers to take extra steps to prove their identity, he should say so himself.”

Wisconsin Governor Defunds REAL ID

May 13, 2008

WisPolitics.com reports that Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle (D) plans to take more than $20 million out of the state’s REAL ID account and transfer it into the state’s general fund.

Wisconsin Representative Jim Sensenbrenner (R) objects:

When I shepherded the REAL ID bill through Congress 3 years ago, it was in response to one of the key recommendations made by the 9/11 Commission, that ‘fraud in identification documents is no longer just a problem of theft.’ As we saw in 2001, in the hands of a terrorist, a valid ID accepted for travel in the US can be just as dangerous as a missile or bomb.

Congressman Sensenbrenner is correct to claim responsibility for REAL ID, but less accurate in other parts of his statement. The 9/11 Commission’s ‘key’ recommendation wasn’t key. (Indeed, Congress’ effort to follow the Commission’s recommendation was repealed by REAL ID.)

Nobody – not the 9/11 Commission, not Congressman Sensenbrenner, not Stewart Baker, nor anyone else – can explain the proximity between false ID and terrorist attacks, or how REAL ID cost-effectively secures the country against any threat.

Wisconsin’s governor has issued a mighty well-placed snub to the creator of the “Sensenbrenner tax.”
